“Don’t Fall Asleep”?

Absorbing God’s Word

“Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Matthew 8:24-25

Applying God’s Word

I can’t begin to count how often I’ve called on God when I have been frightened. Sometimes, if I think He hasn’t heard me, I raise my voice.

In Luke 22: 39-46, right before He is arrested, Jesus asks His disciples to stay awake and pray. He doesn’t want to pray alone, but they fall asleep. They have forgotten how quickly Jesus responded when they feared for their own lives.

I also can’t begin to count how often God has asked me to help someone else who is frightened and alone and I’ve chosen to close my eyes, instead.

I’m not on the front lines during this Pandemic, but God has asked me to stay awake and pray. He has put it on my heart to reach out by phone, Facebook, FaceTime, e-mail or Zoom to those who are alone and/or isolated.

Now is not the time to fall asleep. It’s a time to pray and find little ways that God can use us to calm someone else’s fear.

Accounting of God’s Word

Have I made my list of people to reach out to? Are my eyes open or closed?
