“Deeds of Darkness”

Absorbing God Word

“The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” Romans 13:12

Applying God’s Word

I joined the Navy in 1965 and spent most of my enlistment on a submarine. It was home to a group of rough sailors. The peer pressure to drink and hang out with the rest of the crew made it difficult to put aside the deeds of darkness let alone put on the armor of light.

After being discharged from the service, I was surrounded by other people who enjoyed the highs and lows of marijuana. It didn’t take me long to realize that I traded one season of darkness for another. That period was short lived and left me looking for new friends.

In the early 1980’s, I found myself entertaining some customers who loved three-hour lunches. The darkness that used to only show up on weekends found a way to creep into my workdays.

It wasn’t until the late 1980’s that I made a clean break from relationships that separated me from God. I finally understood what it meant to put on the armor of light. Have I perfected it? Not by a long shot, but I am encouraged by my progress.

Accounting of God’s Word

Am I still consumed by deeds of darkness or has God empowered me to put on the armor of light?
