Absorbing God’s Word
“A discerning son heeds instruction, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.” Proverbs 28:7
Applying God’s Word
The 4th of July was a nice event for our family. Our 55+ community had a cookout and games for the grandchildren. We watched a small veteran’s parade, swam, danced and ate good food.
After sunset, we drove to the top of a mountain that overlooks the entire Santa Clara Valley. We waited patiently for the fireworks to begin.
I have taken our family to displays of fireworks for forty years. On this Fourth of July, I thought we would be witnessing about 15-20 different ones across the valley. To my surprise, there were more like 75-100. The wastefulness of it saddened me. I could hear God speaking to my heart, saying, “Don’t be a companion of gluttons, son.”
I thought about my own wastefulness and about the thousands of dollars going up in smoke. Could there be another way of celebrating our freedom; something that would allow all this wasted money to go toward a more meaningful cause; something that would make our Father proud?
Accounting of God’s Word
Am I a discerning son or a companion of gluttons? Does my wastefulness disgrace God?
